Are you ready to put your finance expertise to work for a green energy law firm? If so, R & W Group has an amazing and unique brand new fully remote Director of Finance role for a green energy law firm. The firm is national, has grown nicely and is looking to continue that growth.
Our client is a mission-driven law firm dedicated to accelerating the world's transition away from fossil fuels. They are looking for their first Director of Finance to join their team. You would be a senior, hands-on leader responsible for all financial operations of the firm. You must be an execution-oriented professional who can operate independently, establish scalable processes and systems, and provide strategic financial insight to the firm's management committee and finance committee.
In this role, you would also help the firm build out the administrative finance functions.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Accounting (Hands-On)
Own the full accounting lifecycle, including general ledger, month-end close, accruals, reconciliations, and financial statements
Maintain cash flow management, including operating accounts, trust accounts (IOLTA), collections, and reserves
Manage trust accounting compliance, ensuring strict segregation and reconciliation in accordance with ethical and regulatory requirements
Expand financial risk detection, control, and compliance capabilities
Tax Preparation, Audit Support
Lead the formal year-end close process, including any necessary adjustments/journal entries in QuickBooks
Prepare and deliver a complete tax workpaper package to CPA, including:
Review of draft federal, state, and local tax returns
Coordinated partner K-1 review and distribution
Coordinate with the CPA to determine required estimated tax payments for the upcoming tax year
Establish and maintain a tax payment calendar to ensure timely payments for state and local estimated payments and partnership-level obligations (composite taxes and PTET)
Billing, Revenue & Partner Economics
Oversee law firm billing processes
Work closely with attorneys and firm leadership on billing discipline and revenue realization
Prepare and analyze partner compensation, distributions, and profitability metrics
Track and report utilization, realization, and leverage metrics
Budgeting, Forecasting & Reporting
Prepare annual budget and manage related processes and rolling forecasts
Provide monthly and quarterly financial reporting to firm leadership
Build and maintain financial models to support hiring, compensation planning, pricing, and growth initiatives
Deliver clear, decision-oriented financial insights to Partnership
Compliance, Controls & Risk Management
Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax requirements, and applicable federal and state regulations
Coordinate with external accountants, tax advisors, and auditors
Establish and maintain internal controls, policies, and procedures appropriate for a growing law firm
Mitigate/early detect high credit exposure
Systems, Process Improvement & Scaling
Evaluate, implement, and optimize financial systems and tools (e.g., accounting software, billing platforms, etc.)
Document and standardize finance processes to support scale and transparency
Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and financial visibility
Grow, manage and lead a finance team as the firm grows (e.g., Controller, billing staff, etc.)
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or related field (CPA or MBA strongly preferred)
8-12+ years of progressive finance and accounting and tax preparation experience, with at least 3-5 years in a senior leadership role
Direct experience in a law firm or professional services environment required
Demonstrated ability to personally execute complex accounting and finance work while also operating at a strategic level
Strong knowledge of law firm economics, billing, collections, and trust accounting
Advanced proficiency in financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting
Exceptional attention to detail, judgment, and integrity

Benefits

Base salary of $170,000-$210,000+ (depending upon location and experience.)
